Rainbow Baby

A rainbow baby is what they call a baby born to a couple after they’ve suffered the loss of a baby due to miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal death or infant loss.

Jessica and Kevin Mahoney are no stranger to loss. Before the birth of their 4-year-old son, Corbin, they suffered 2 miscarriages, and they have suffered the loss of six more since his birth. But they are expecting a new baby soon, and they wanted to welcome their new ‘rainbow’ baby in a very special way. So Kevin reached out to photographer JoAnn Marrero who’s stunning image you see above quickly went viral.

Rainbow Baby’s Birth Has Doctor In Tears

Amanda and Andrew are also no stranger to the pain of losing a child. Their baby Klayton died shortly after his birth, and their doctor Bryan Hodges, cried with the devastated couple. Three months later, the couple was fearful but elated to learn they were once again expecting a little boy.

Photographer Sarah Ledford was on-hand to capture the birth of their rainbow baby, Kaleb, and she captured this beautiful image of the emotional dad and Dr. Hodges crying together.

“Some days, it’s still a roller coaster,” Amanda said. “Looking at Karson, I try to imagine where Klayton would be at this point and some days it just hits me like a ton of bricks that he’s not here. I just wish he was.”

Rainbow Baby In Hobby Lobby

Courtney Mixon was in Hobby Lobby when she spied a woman wearing a T-shirt with a rainbow heart over her belly. Courtney knew that meant the woman had endured a loss and was carrying a rainbow baby. She just knew she had to talk to her! She introduced herself to Autumn Tolliver Safley, and they shared their stories of loss and agreed to pray for one another.

Courtney’s post read:

Alright standing in line at NLR Hobby Lobby I see this a rainbow heart printed on her belly. I automatically knew what it meant. She had suffered a miscarriage and now she was carrying a beautiful rainbow baby. As she passed me I had to speak up.

I said I love your shirt! She replied that her husband was hesitant for her to wear it ( because people wouldn’t know what it meant) I then told her it’s so taboo to talk about miscarriages and I was proud of her for wearing it.

I told her my story and she told me hers. We hugged and said we would keep each other in our prayers! Me for her baby’s continuing good health and her for me to conceive.

I asked to take a pic and realized I left my phone in the car. She handed me her phone and sent that picture to me. She’s such a beautiful woman and mommy!!! A complete stranger….

Thank you Autumn for making me and my husband’s day! Please share this so maybe she can see how much she touched our hearts…
