Actor and conservationist, Steve Irwin is being posthumously honored on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He was affectionately known as the “Crocodile Hunter” and had a show of the same name.
Steve Irwin was the face of the Australia Zoo. He worked tirelessly to excite and educate the world on the amazing animal planet. Steve was loved for his familiar charm, enthusiastic monologues, and fearless love of all animal species. He was extremely popular on talk shows where his honest passion for conservation could not be missed.
Unfortunately, Steve’s enthusiasm often put him in harms way. It made for great television and helped viewers to learn more the “predator” animals. But came at a cost. In 2006, Irwin died in a freak accident after being stabbed in the heart by a stingray barb. At the time, he was filming a new documentary called the “Ocean’s Deadliest”.
Steve Irwin was born in 1962, and grew up on the Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park (now known as the Australia Zoo) owned by his parents, Bob and Lyn Irwin. Steve learned animal behavior by interacting with them regularly. He held no official degree in the field but outpaced other conservationists with his hands on experience. He learned how to catch and release crocodiles from his father.
“We were two peas out of the same pod I think, both of us thrived on the adrenalin rush from pushing the envelope as far as you could go,” father Bob Irwin said.
In 1991, Steve met a stunning zoo visitor and American naturalist named Terrie. They described their meeting as love at first sight. The two were quickly engaged and married in 1992. Their honeymoon involved filming crocodiles and became the base footage for the new series “The Crocodile Hunter” which began that same year. Terri said of the time:
“I thought there was no one like this anywhere in the world. He sounded like an environmental Tarzan, a larger-than-life superhero guy.”
The couple grew their family with daughter, Bindi Sue and son, Robert Clarence “Bob” named for Steve’s father. Bindi and Robert have grown up working with animals. They are excited to share the same passions as their late father. They were young (8 and 2 years old) when Steve’s life was cut short. However, it’s obvious they have inherited his passion for wildlife.
Steve’s star will be a part of the 2018 Hollywood Star class. Terri, Bindi, and Robert were asked to view a surprise video. They had no idea what the information was they were about to receive. In the video, the family was surprised with news of Steve’s upcoming honor! Their joy was undeniable and obviously very heart-felt.

“Steve has always said that he didn’t care if anyone remembered him, as long as they remembered his message,” Terry Irwin said.
Daughter, Bindi, also expressed her excitement later on her Instagram account:
I am beyond excited to share with you all that we have just received the news that Dad will be honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Dad changed the world by reaching out to people through their television screens to bring them on the adventure of a lifetime. To have his name on a Hollywood Star means the world as we carry on his important work. #HollywoodWalkOfFame
The family have continued to work together as conservationists and continuing his legacy. Bindi is studying Business and Tourism at TAFE. She hopes to help Terrie run the Australia Zoo in the future.
Noted for his resemblance to Steve, Bob Jr. is every bit as charming and enthusiastic in his love of wildlife as well. He recently stole the world’s heart with his talk show interview on The Tonight Show.
