102-year-old Arrested And Happy
Not many people would be happy to be handcuffed and placed in the backseat of a police cruiser. But Edie Simms was! Edie, a 102-year-old arrested recently, was very cheerful as she walked with officers to their car.
And you might think officers would feel guilty ‘arresting’ someone her age, but they were really happy about it, too! That’s because they were doing Edie a favor. They were helping Edie fulfill an unusual bucket list wish.

Edie is known for her generosity. She regularly makes handmade items to give to residents at the local senior center near where she lives, but she’d never visited there in person. After years of her acts of kindness, the center wanted to do something to return the favor. Since one of the volunteers at the center was friends with a local police officer, the senior center enlisted the help of the local police department. So the police offered to give Edie a lift to the senior center to deliver her handmade goodies in person. “We love it and we get more out of it than the seniors do,” Police Sgt. John McLaughlin said.
And that’s saying something, because when they told her, Edie’s reaction was 100% joy. She told the center’s director, Michael Howard, “Oh that’d be wonderful. Do you think they’d put handcuffs on me?”
Once she arrived at the senior center, Edie handed out free handmade scarves and socks and played some Bingo. She also offered up this advice:
“Keep going. Don’t ever stop whatever it is you’re doing, and spend some time doing community service. Because sometimes the person you reach out and touch, is the only person that they will talk to in a day.”
