Grandpa’s Funny Birthday Card Had Unexpected Family Surprise
This Grandpa received a very special birthday card from his daughter out of state. The funny card displayed an unexpected family surprise!
Dr. Robert Kirk was turning 74. His family went on the hunt for the perfect birthday card to celebrate his birthday. Since they were in Kansas and he was in Ohio, they knew it had to be special to make up for their absence. That’s when his 12 year old granddaughter found what she thought was the perfect card.
On the front it read: “It’s Your Birthday” and showed a photo of a large family from the early 1900s. Very few of the group were smiling in what was typical style of the era. The inside of the card read: “We haven’t seen this much excitement since Aunt Lulu was picked up by a tornado, set down nude in the middle of the hog auction, and sold to the highest bidder!”
It took some time convincing the girl’s mother, Jan Amstutz, that this was THE card. Finally she decided to the purchase it. They hoped it would give Grandpa a laugh. Before sending it, Jan spent time looking at the ominous faces on the front and was surprised to find what she thought was a happy coincidence. One of the young boys looked just like her father’s father! Another woman looked just like her great-grandmother. This just made the card seem that much funnier to send her father.
“I remember calling my dad before his birthday telling him to closely look at the card,” said Jan. “He called me on his birthday all excited!”
Unexpected Family Surprise
When Grandfather Kirk received the card, he took one look at it and realized that the faces staring back at him looked very familiar. So he had other family members look at it. That’s when they realized that the image on the card held an unexpected family surprise.
Unbeknownst to Jan and her family when they purchased the card, this was indeed a photograph of HER ancestors! After some research the family determined that it was a wedding photo taken in 1906. The happy couple were seated in the center, Louis Morlan and Eva Courtney. Louis was a cousin to the birthday boy! Not only that, but his father is in the photo as a young boy.
After lots more laughs, Jan returned to back to the store she purchased the card from and bought the rest of their supply. They had them framed and each family member received one to hang on their wall! After contacting Hallmark, it was determined that they purchase photographs from old studios that have shut down and when the photos haven’t been claimed they use them for their cards. It is believed this is what happened to this very special 100 year old wedding photo.
