Dad Interviews His Daughter On The First Day Of School – For 12 Years

Dad interviews his daughter on the first day of school – from 1st grade through 12th grade. Then he made a touching video montage. The result is so sweet!

Kevin Scruggs knew that his daughters would grow up quickly. Those sweet moments he cherished as they hit milestones would quickly fade away. Wanting to hold on to those memories, not just for himself but also for his girls, he decided to interview them the first day of school.  He continued with his oldest from 1st grade through 12th grade.

“I’m sentimental,” he told Huffington Post. “I’m looking at my little girl and thinking she’s going to grow up really fast and this is going to be a cool thing for me to do.”

Scruggs’ oldest daughter graduated high school recently. One of his gifts to her was a compilation video of her years of interviews with him.

As most parents will agree, each year their children develop new and special ways that they connect with life and with their parents. While a 13 year old might have transitioned from “Daddy” to “Dad” there is still something very unique in their likes and dislikes, the tone of their voice, and the sparkle in their eye. Each phase brings something new to be remembered.

“She’s been beautiful through every single stage of her life,” he told HuffPost. “I love her. I’m so grateful I get to be her dad. She’s a pretty amazing young woman.”

As Mackenzie got older, her responses to Dad’s questions were shorter. She was slowly becoming more deliberate in her answers and not as willing to share all about her day as she was in elementary school.

When Kevin was interviewing Mackenzie for her 8th grade year, he stalled a little bit during the questions.

‘Well, Daddy had a hard time with you going today ’cause I know this is like your last year and then next year you’re going to be in high school,’ he said, in the video. ‘So I’m proud of you, but Daddy’s a little sad.’

The first-day interview tradition has continued on with his youngest. Kevin is emotional to see these 12 years fly by, but says he’s looking forward to the next few years of interviews with his youngest.
